Battelle highlighted Biotechnology Innovation during the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology visit to Ohio. The organization hosted NSCEB members at its Columbus headquarters. The visit showcased advanced research, biosecurity capabilities, and partnerships. Moreover, it emphasized efforts to strengthen national security and supply chain resilience.
The event was attended by members of the committee, policymakers, and representatives from the industries. Further, academic experts and government representatives also participated in the discussions. They deliberated on the role of biotechnology in ensuring national security and economic competitiveness of the nation.
“Across the country, we’re seeing remarkable innovation in biotechnology, and we are hearing a consistent message about the importance of strengthening domestic capabilities, developing talent, and accelerating the transition of scientific breakthroughs into real-world impact,” said Alina Meltaus, Chief of Staff, NSCEB. “Ohio’s biotechnology ecosystem reflects the kind of public-private collaboration among industry, government, academia, and research organizations that will be critical to maintaining U.S. competitiveness and strengthening our national security.”
Advancing Biotechnology Research and National Security Capabilities
The day started with a discussion panel about Ohio’s developing biotech ecosystem. Topics covered include innovation, workforce development, and commercialization. Additionally, they mentioned partnerships that contribute to applications related to national security. Panelists included people from JobsOhio, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, AFRL, and Battelle.
After the presentation, there was a research exhibit at the organization’s facility. This exhibit featured developments in biosecurity, retro biosynthesis, and advanced energetics. There were other areas of interest such as supply chain vulnerabilities and threats that were discussed. Other topics included New Approach Methodologies and the national laboratory’s contribution. All of these areas contribute to Biotechnology Innovation.

Lastly, the NSCEB kept up with its regional involvement by visiting Andelyn Biosciences. The Ohio Life Science Training Center, both of which emphasized Biotechnology Innovation & training within the expanding life science industry in Ohio.
