Hologic, Inc. recently launched a new campaign to improve women’s health outcomes across the United States. The company partnered with professional basketball star Erica Wheeler to lead the “Ultimate Defense” initiative. This educational program focuses on the vital role of cervical cancer screening in early detection. Wheeler is using her platform to share a deeply personal story about the disease. She lost her mother to cervical cancer more than ten years ago.

“I’m using my platform to tell women that going to their doctor for Pap and HPV testing is one of the most important ways to protect their cervical health,” shared Erica Wheeler.

Harnessing the Power of Sports for Preventative Care

The campaign officially arrived during Cervical Health Awareness Month this January. It features a public service announcement video and extensive social media content. These resources aim to spark meaningful conversations between women and their healthcare providers. Currently, many women are behind on their routine screenings and preventative care appointments. Hologic wants to reverse this trend by highlighting that cervical cancer is largely preventable.

“Women need to know that we have the tools to prevent cervical cancer or effectively treat it when caught early. With this campaign, Hologic is reminding women that they deserve the peace of mind that comes from regular screening by their doctor. With this campaign, Hologic is reminding women that they deserve the peace of mind that comes from regular screening by their doctor,” said Michelle Janisch, Vice President of Marketing at Hologic.

Medical studies show that co-testing provides the most effective defense for patients. This method combines the Pap test with HPV testing to detect 95% of cervical cancers. The Pap test finds abnormal cells, while the HPV test identifies high-risk infections. Hologic remains a global leader in developing these diagnostic technologies. They continue to advocate for regular screenings to ensure the best possible health standards for women everywhere.
