Regional medical leader MarinHealth recently announced the official launch of the Haynes Heart & Vascular Institute.
This historic milestone recognizes the transformational generosity of the late Bill Haynes and Reta Haynes. Crucially, their enduring philanthropic vision helped shape this premier regional medical program. The institute now expands access to world-class cardiovascular care throughout the entire North Bay community.
A Legacy of Medical Innovation
The announcement follows a special celebratory reception held on June 29 at MarinHealth Medical Center. During this event, local physicians, caregivers, community leaders, and the Haynes family gathered together. They celebrated the long history of the medical program while looking toward the future of local cardiac treatments.
Today, the advanced institute serves patients across Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and neighboring areas. It provides direct access to nationally recognized physicians and innovative treatments close to home.
“World-class healthcare is built through visionary leadership, extraordinary caregivers, and a community that believes in investing in its future,” said David G. Klein, MD, MBA, CEO of MarinHealth. “Bill and Reta Haynes shared that vision. Their generosity helped lay the foundation for the remarkable program we have today, and their legacy will continue to inspire our physicians and caregivers as we advance cardiac care for generations to come.”
Expanding Clinical Capabilities Across Four Decades
Over the past four decades, MarinHealth steadily expanded its specialized heart services. The medical program originally began back in the 1980s. At that time, the hospital opened its first cardiac surgery facility.
Later, in 1993, the hospital launched its progressive Atherosclerosis Management Program to emphasize preventive care. The center grew again in the early 2000s by adding an advanced electrophysiology laboratory.
Subsequently, a major milestone occurred in 2009. Bill and Reta Haynes established the Haynes Cardiovascular Institute to honor renowned cardiologist Dr. David Sperling. This major philanthropic investment rapidly accelerated corporate growth.
Since that moment, MarinHealth has invested heavily in modern medical assets to build upon the institute’s foundation. For example, they constructed the state-of-the-art Oak Pavilion. They also recruited dedicated heart failure specialists to the regional team. Furthermore, the hospital opened a specialized Hybrid Operating Room and created a dedicated Women’s Heart Health Program.
Comprehensive Medical Services and Future Growth
Currently, the institute offers comprehensive solutions across multiple branches of medicine. These clinical services include:
- Preventive heart care and comprehensive cardiology.
- Advanced cardiothoracic surgery for highly complex procedures.
- A specialized Structural Heart Program offering modern TAVR and Watchman™ therapies.
- A progressive Heart Rhythm Program treating complex cardiac arrhythmias.
- A specialized Women’s Heart Health Program for all life stages.
- A growing Sports Cardiology Program tailored for active individuals.
- Comprehensive vascular surgery combined with advanced imaging tools.
Later this year, the facility will launch an enhanced Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. This upcoming service will feature the internationally recognized Pritikin curriculum. It will combine supervised exercise with stress management to reduce future risks.
“Our commitment extends far beyond treating heart disease,” Dr. Klein said. “We are equally committed to preventing it, helping patients recover, and supporting them throughout every stage of their heart health journey. The Haynes Heart & Vascular Institute reflects that comprehensive vision.”
Ultimately, multi-disciplinary teamwork defines this successful medical program. The new institute builds on this tradition while positioning the hospital for future innovation.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we are also looking ahead,” Dr. Klein added. “The naming of the Haynes Heart & Vascular Institute is more than recognition of an extraordinary family. It is a statement about our future. Together with our physicians, caregivers, staff and community partners, we will continue advancing innovation, expanding access, and ensuring patients throughout the North Bay can receive world-class cardiovascular care close to home.”
