Radformation has received expanded U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for OptiPlan automated VMAT planning. The company announced the clearance under K261718 for EZFluence. The clearance adds OptiPlan* as a new automated VMAT planning module within EZFluence. As a result, clinicians in the United States can now use OptiPlan in clinical settings. Radformation provides intelligent automation solutions for radiation oncology. The company developed OptiPlan to support treatment planners during complex planning workflows.
The latest clearance also expands access to the technology beyond Europe and Canada. Radformation previously introduced OptiPlan in those markets. The company said OptiPlan helps planners manage repetitive optimization work more efficiently. At the same time, the system keeps clinical decisions under the control of treatment planning teams.
“OptiPlan was built in direct response to what we were hearing from our users. Treatment planners need ways to work more efficiently without giving up control over clinical decisions,” said Jayne Churness, Director of Product Management at Radformation. “By automating repetitive optimization work while keeping clinicians at the center of the process, OptiPlan gives planners more time to focus on the decisions where their expertise matters most.”
Automated VMAT Planning Supports Clinical Workflows
OptiPlan uses patient anatomy and clinical priorities defined through ClearCheck templates. It then generates high-quality VMAT plans without requiring model training or commissioning. This approach allows treatment planners to work with established clinical priorities. Moreover, planners can assess different planning approaches before making a final selection. The platform allows planners to adjust the balance between target coverage and organ-at-risk sparing. They can also compare plan options side by side.
This comparison allows planners to gain a better understanding of the treatment planning options available. Therefore, they can choose the method that is most consistent with the clinical goals of each patient. Automation of VMAT planning can also reduce repetitive optimization work. This allows treatment planners to spend time on important clinical considerations. Radformation has developed OptiPlan to facilitate this workflow while keeping clinicians involved. The technology does not substitute the role of the planner in clinical decision making. Rather, it automates portions of the planning process that can involve significant repetitive effort. So planners can concentrate their expertise where it is most needed.
Radformation to Demonstrate OptiPlan at ASTRO 2026
Radformation will showcase OptiPlan during the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting. The event will take place from September 27th to 29th in Boston, MA. Attendees can watch live demonstrations of OptiPlan automated VMAT planning during the event. They can also explore Radformation’s broader advancements across the radiotherapy workflow. The company will present an extended library of more than 520 AI-trained contouring models through AutoContour. The expanded capabilities are designed to support different radiation oncology workflows.
Radformation will also showcase enhanced reirradiation solutions with AutoContour and ClearCheck. These solutions enable the planning and quality assurance needs within radiotherapy workflows. Further, the company will demonstrate zero-click plan and log file analysis. This functionality is provided by ClearCalc and RadMonteCarlo for treatment planning workflows. Radformation will also demonstrate fully automated offline adaptive assessment via ChartCheck Adaptive. The solution facilitates assessment processes in adaptive radiation therapy workflows. Also, the company will showcase automated billing QA and prior authorization review. These capabilities are available to healthcare and radiation oncology teams through QuickCode.
Radformation will show its focus on workflow automation with these demonstrations. The company is also developing tools to support treatment planning and radiation therapy operations. OptiPlan’s FDA clearance is a next step in expanding access for automated VMAT planning. Now with regulatory clearance, U.S. clinical teams can explore the technology. OptiPlan automated VMAT planning is an optional EZFluence module, not available in all markets. Availability subject to applicable regulatory approvals.
