Takeda and the Indonesian Government announced a groundbreaking partnership today. This historic alliance builds long-term healthcare resilience. Furthermore, the agreement expands access to lifesaving plasma-derived medicinal products. The Indonesian Ministry of Health granted a plasma fractionation license to Takeda. Consequently, this allows the company to collect and process plasma locally. Three government ministries joined forces with the global biopharmaceutical leader. This collaboration marks a major milestone for the country. It elevates regional biopharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities significantly.
“This initiative reflects Indonesia’s commitment to building strategic healthcare capabilities and ensuring sustainable access to essential and innovative therapies for Indonesian patients,” said Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Ministry of Health, Republic of Indonesia. “By working closely with trusted global partners like Takeda, we can accelerate the development of a more resilient, future-ready healthcare system.”
This multi-year initiative represents the first of its kind in the ASEAN region. Moreover, the project focuses on sustainable plasma collection at scale. It transforms the nation into a prominent regional hub for advanced plasma science. Takeda brings decades of local experience to this new venture to build healthcare resilience. Therefore, the partnership will improve local standards of care for thousands of patients.
“This initiative demonstrates Takeda’s commitment to expanding access to PDMPs, advancing healthcare resilience and supporting sustainable health systems,” said Ramy Riad, President, Plasma-Derived Therapies at Takeda. “From the introduction of our first PDMPs in Indonesia earlier this year to our investment in local plasma infrastructure, we are proud to extend our collaboration with Indonesia and leverage our global expertise in plasma science to support Indonesia’s long-term healthcare objectives. Together, we aim to improve standards of care, create highly skilled jobs and bolster long-term supply of lifesaving, life-sustaining therapies for patients in Indonesia and around the world.”
Investing in Infrastructure and Jobs
Initially, Takeda will invest 30 million U.S. dollars into a pilot program. This two-year project establishes advanced plasma donation centers across the country. Meanwhile, the team will evaluate operational models before expanding. These facilities will follow strict international quality and regulatory standards. Additionally, the project will create highly skilled jobs for local healthcare professionals. Laboratory technicians will receive specialized training in international standard practices.
In parallel, Takeda will assess the feasibility of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. This factory could supply advanced products worldwide. Thus, the country strengthens its global supply chain presence.
“This investment represents the type of strategic, long-term investment that Indonesia seeks to attract. Beyond the capital commitment, it brings opportunities for technology transfer, talent development and job creation. The collaboration not only elevates and strengthens Indonesia’s healthcare ecosystem but also supports our ambition to establish Indonesia as a regional hub for advanced life sciences and biopharmaceutical manufacturing,” said Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry / Chairman of BKPM, Rosan P. Roeslani.
Global demand for plasma-derived medicinal products grows continuously. However, ASEAN countries face major supply challenges. Underdiagnosis and limited awareness also create barriers to patient care. This new initiative explicitly addresses these specific issues. The first BioLife plasma center will open its doors in 2027. In the meantime, Takeda will process local plasma in its existing global network. Takeda guarantees it will prioritize domestic needs first. Ultimately, this comprehensive strategy secures long-term healthcare resilience for the entire population.
