Tanner Health and Healthliant Ventures Advance Lung Cancer Detection with Optellum AI

Tanner Health and Healthliant Ventures Partner With Optellum to Bring AI for Lung Health to the Region

Tanner Health and Healthliant Ventures have launched Optellum’s Virtual Nodule Clinic. Artificial intelligence powers this advanced lung cancer detection platform. The solution helps care teams identify, assess, and manage patients with potentially cancerous lung nodules.

The introduction of the AI-driven platform strengthens Tanner Health’s commitment to improving lung cancer detection. It also enhances patient care through innovative healthcare technology.

Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer related deaths all over the world. However, delayed diagnosis remains one of the biggest challenges in treatment. To address this issue, Optellum developed its Lung Cancer Prediction AI solution. The platform uses advanced imaging analytics and machine learning to assess lung nodules identified during CT scans. It helps determine whether a detected lung nodule is malignant.

Resulting in clinicians can identify high-risk patients earlier. At the same time, they can reduce unnecessary procedures for patients who face minimal risk.

The partnership represents another important step in Tanner Health’s strategy to bring advanced healthcare innovation to the communities it serves.

Through this collaboration, Tanner clinicians can use Optellum’s AI technology to support faster and more accurate lung cancer detection. The initiative aims to improve outcomes for patients across west Georgia and east Alabama.

“For a regional health system like ours, innovation isn’t about size — it’s about intent,” said Ben Camp, MD, chief medical officer of Tanner Health. “We’re proud to bring the kind of technology that you’d expect to see in major academic centers right here to our corner of the world. It’s another example of how we’re investing in the tools and partnerships that help our clinicians provide the best care for our patients.”

AI Platform Supports Faster Clinical Decision-Making

Optellum’s Virtual Nodule Clinic combines advanced imaging AI with clinical data. Consequently, physicians can assess lung nodules more effectively and determine which patients require additional diagnostic evaluation.

Furthermore, the technology improves risk stratification. This capability supports earlier diagnosis while reducing unnecessary invasive procedures.

“Early detection is key to saving lives, and AI can help us identify lung cancer before symptoms appear,” said Anil Dhople, MD, a board-certified radiation oncologist and medical director and quality advisor at the Roy Richards, Sr. Cancer Center. “Through our partnership with Optellum, we’re introducing proven, FDA-cleared technology that enhances how clinicians evaluate lung nodules, helping us make faster, more informed decisions and deliver the best possible outcomes for our patients. This technology is especially valuable in rural communities, where longer travel distances, limited access to specialists and delays in treatment can negatively affect outcomes. By improving risk assessment and supporting earlier intervention, we can help ensure patients receive the timely care they need.”

The initiative is the latest project launched through Healthliant Ventures. The organization was created to connect Tanner Health with emerging healthcare technologies capable of transforming care delivery and patient outcomes.

“Optellum’s AI solution aligns perfectly with our mission to provide quality healthcare services and serve as a leader to provide health education, support services and care across our community,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health. “It empowers our clinicians with actionable insights and helps ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.”

Optellum’s platform already supports leading academic and community hospitals around the world. In addition, healthcare organizations using the solution have reported improvements in diagnostic accuracy and workflow efficiency.

“This partnership with Tanner demonstrates how a regional system can lead the way by embracing innovative, clinically validated solutions in a way that benefits both patients and the broader healthcare ecosystem,” said Johnathan Watkins, CEO of Optellum.

Notably, Tanner Health has become one of the first regional health systems in Georgia to implement the technology across its entire network.
