Tarsus Pharmaceuticals Completes Alkeus Acquisition to Expand Eye Care Leadership

Tarsus Pharmaceuticals

Tarsus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has completed its previously announced acquisition of Alkeus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The transaction expands Tarsus Pharmaceuticals’ position in eye care and retinal disease. The acquisition adds gildeuretinol (ALK-001) to Tarsus Pharmaceuticals’ pipeline. ALK-001 is a differentiated Phase 3 oral investigational medicine. The medicine aims to target the underlying biology of Stargardt’s disease. Stargardt’s disease is a potentially blinding condition with no FDA-approved therapy.

The deal also strengthens Tarsus Pharmaceuticals’ differentiated pipeline. Furthermore, it supports the company’s broader leadership strategy within the eye care sector.

Adds gildeuretinol (ALK-001), a differentiated Phase 3 oral investigational medicine designed to target the underlying biology of Stargardt’s disease, a potentially blinding disease with no FDA-approved therapy

Tarsus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: TARS) today announced that it has completed its previously announced acquisition of Alkeus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held retinal disease-focused biotechnology company.

“Completing the Alkeus acquisition marks an important step forward in our vision to build a leading eye care company,” said Bobby Azamian, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Tarsus. “ALK-001 is highly complementary to our core strengths and has the potential to become a foundational medicine for people living with Stargardt disease, a potentially blinding disease with no FDA-approved treatment. With the transaction complete, our focus is on advancing the NORTHSTAR trial and realizing the full potential of this important clinical-stage program.”

ALK-001 Expands Tarsus Pharmaceuticals’ Retinal Pipeline

Following the transaction, Tarsus Pharmaceuticals gains worldwide rights to ALK-001. The company describes ALK-001 as a new, investigational, late-stage molecular entity. The medicine is designed to reduce the accumulation of toxic dimers. At the same time, it aims to preserve the normal visual cycle. Tarsus Pharmaceuticals believes ALK-001 could represent a potential blockbuster opportunity. The opportunity centers on one of the largest inherited retinal diseases.

ALK-001 has already secured several FDA designations for Stargardt disease. These include Breakthrough Therapy, Orphan Drug, Fast Track and Rare Pediatric Disease designations. The program is also advancing through clinical development. Currently, ALK-001 is being evaluated in the global NORTHSTAR Phase 3 trial.

Tarsus Pharmaceuticals expects to receive topline data from the trial in 2029. The company will now focus on advancing the program and maximizing its clinical potential.

Acquisition Strengthens Tarsus’ Eye Care Strategy

The Alkeus acquisition adds a late-stage retinal program to Tarsus Pharmaceuticals’ portfolio. As a result, the company gains access to a potentially important treatment opportunity. Stargardt disease remains an area with significant unmet medical needs. The condition can cause severe vision loss and currently has no FDA-approved treatment. Therefore, the addition of ALK-001 could broaden Tarsus Pharmaceuticals’ presence in retinal therapeutics. It also complements the company’s existing capabilities in eye care.

The acquisition was announced on August 6, 2026. Since then, both companies have taken all necessary steps to close the transaction. The transaction closed upon satisfaction of customary closing conditions by the parties. These conditions were set out in the final merger deal. With the transaction now complete, Tarsus Pharmaceuticals will continue to advance the NORTHSTAR Phase 3 trial. The company will also investigate the broader potential of ALK-001.

The transaction marks another step in Tarsus Pharmaceuticals’ strategy to build a leading eye care company. Meanwhile, the addition of ALK-001 expands its focus on serious retinal diseases. As clinical development continues, the company will monitor progress toward the expected 2029 topline data. The upcoming results could provide important insights into ALK-001’s potential in Stargardt disease. Overall, the Alkeus acquisition strengthens Tarsus Pharmaceuticals’ pipeline. It also adds a late-stage investigational medicine targeting an important unmet need in eye care.
