UnitedHealthcare’s 2027 Medicare Plans Emphasize Affordability, Simplicity and Connected Care

UnitedHealthcare has introduced its UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage 2027 plans for the upcoming coverage year. The plans focus on affordability, simplicity and connected healthcare experiences. They also address the needs of a growing and diverse Medicare population.

The company also aims to make healthcare more personalized and easier to navigate. Its approach combines technology, provider relationships and affordability initiatives.

Affordable Medicare Advantage Coverage

For 2027, UnitedHealthcare continues to build Medicare Advantage plans around key member needs. The company is expanding access while maintaining benefits across its Medicare portfolio. More than 94% of Medicare-eligible individuals nationwide will have access to a UnitedHealthcare Medicare plan. Approximately 90% of eligible consumers can access a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan with a $0 premium option.

The company also reports strong protection against high annual healthcare costs. More than 95% of non-SNP members do not reach their annual maximum out-of-pocket limit. Many members spend less than $300 annually on care. UnitedHealthcare will also preserve several benefits for members in 2027. All members will have access to $0 primary care visits. 

They will also receive $0 preventive care services and $0 Tier 1 prescription drug copays. Dental, vision and hearing benefits will further support whole-person health. These benefits are not typically available through Original Medicare.

Support for a variety of medical needs

The new UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage 2027 plan has the flexibility to meet the diverse health and coverage needs of patients. Package includes standard health insurance, plus additional support for serious conditions. The corporation emphasizes the importance of HMO, Chronic Special Needs Plan and Dual Special Needs Plan.

About 95% of Medicare-eligible people in UnitedHealthcare’s footprint will select a Medicare Advantage HMO plan. Most of these people will be eligible for a $0 premium plan as well. 

HMO plans offer coordinated care and lower out-of-pocket costs. They also come with supplemental benefits to support member health and well-being. HMO individuals saved more than $175 a year in out-of-pocket costs. The comparison was among members enrolled in LPPO plans. UnitedHealthcare will also increase its support for dual-eligible populations. Its D-SNP plans will cover roughly 74% of dual-eligible members.

These plans coordinate benefits between Medicare and Medicaid. The company will continue to scale integrated care models through 2027. UnitedHealthcare’s D-SNP portfolio will be guided by better care coordination. It will also improve integration of benefits for members with complex needs. 

The company will also boost its support for chronic disease. Its C-SNPs will cover about 48 million Medicare-eligible people in 2027. These plans benefit those living with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic heart failure. They connect members to the right care, medications and other support. 

UnitedHealthcare Improves the UCard Experience

UnitedHealthcare will begin to phase in a series of improvements to its UCard beginning in 2027, to enhance security, convenience and access to benefits. Members will receive an upgraded UCard that will include specific benefit credits and rewards, and a specialized Member ID card with health plan information. 

The updated UCard will introduce enhanced security and functionality through Mastercard®. Qualifying D-SNP members will also gain access to real-time utilities payments. Members can use their benefits at more than 70,000 participating retail locations nationwide. Participating retailers include Walmart, Dollar General and Target.

Members may buy qualified over-the-counter products and healthy foods. They can also use eligible benefits on other everyday essentials. Expanded retail and payment networks will bring more shopping options. More places for members to get eligible benefits and make payments.

UnitedHealthcare also will expand digital access to benefit information. Members can view balances, covered products and participating stores online. The information is available through the UnitedHealthcare app. These digital instruments provide real-time visibility of available benefits. 

Prescription coverage continues to be a major focus

“UnitedHealthcare will remain focused on affordable access to prescriptions in 2027.” The company will keep $0 Tier 1 prescription drug copays for nearly all Medicare Advantage members. It will also increase access to affordable generics. These choices can help members save on prescriptions. 

Members will have access to more than 60,000 network pharmacies. The network includes retail chains, grocery stores and independent pharmacies. Eligible members can also use Optum Home Delivery for qualifying prescriptions. In addition, many commonly prescribed medications will have 100-day supply options.

Stand-alone Part D plans will provide $0 Tier 1 copays at preferred pharmacies. UnitedHealthcare will also provide resources to help understand prescription costs. These resources can help members evaluate coverage options year-round.

Building a More Connected Medicare Experience

UnitedHealthcare’s 2027 Medicare Advantage strategy combines affordability and easier access to healthcare. The company is also expanding support for members with chronic, complex conditions. Its refreshed benefits are designed to make navigating health care easier. Online resources will keep members connected to their coverage and available benefits.
