ZAP Surgical Systems, Inc. has announced a major expansion in Southeast Asia. Vibharam Amatanakorn Specialized Cancer Hospital will install the first ZAP-X platform in Thailand and Southeast Asia. The hospital operates in Chonburi Province, Thailand. The location sits about 90 minutes southeast of Bangkok. Chonburi also serves as a strategic economic hub within Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). The region also remains a major coastal destination on the Gulf of Thailand. Vibharam Amatanakorn Specialized Cancer Hospital belongs to the Vibharam Hospital Group. It is the group’s first dedicated cancer hospital.
The facility stands next to Vibharam Amatanakorn Hospital. Both facilities operate at the AMATA City Chonburi industrial estate. The hospital plans to use ZAP-X to strengthen its brain tumor treatment capabilities. The platform will support stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for primary and metastatic brain tumors. It will also support treatment for other intracranial disorders. Furthermore, neurosurgeons across the Vibharam hospital network are expected to refer suitable patients.
These patients will receive treatment through the hospital’s new dedicated SRS center. As a result, the center could expand access to advanced brain radiosurgery services in the region.
“Introducing the first ZAP-X system in Southeast Asia represents an important milestone for both Vibharam and the region,” said Yair Bauer, Vice President of ZAP Surgical APAC & President of ZAP Surgical Japan. “Vibharam’s commitment to bringing advanced radiosurgery to Chonburi demonstrates how forward-thinking healthcare organizations can expand access to world-class brain tumor care closer to where patients live and work.”
ZAP-X Installation Set for November 2026
ZAP Surgical Systems expects installation of the ZAP-X system to begin in November 2026. The hospital anticipates treating its first patients in early 2027. The new platform will support the hospital’s growing focus on specialized cancer care. In addition, it will provide another treatment option for eligible patients with brain tumors. Stereotactic radiosurgery is a completely non-invasive outpatient procedure. Doctors use SRS to treat many primary and metastatic brain tumors. The procedure can also address several other disorders affecting the brain, head, and neck. Moreover, SRS can serve as an alternative to open surgery in many cases.
Patients often get treated in one short visit. This process is done with no incisions and no anesthesia. So, a lot of patients are able to go home and do normal activities the same day. The treatment technique concentrates the radiation directly on the target. That precision enables doctors to give targeted treatment, while limiting unnecessary exposure to surrounding tissue. This may yield critical practical benefits for patients and healthcare providers. It also helps to streamline pathways to outpatient treatment where clinically appropriate.
“Radiosurgery represents one of the defining advances in contemporary neurosurgery, yet access remains far too limited around the world,” said John R. Adler, MD, Founder and CEO of ZAP Surgical and Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology at Stanford Medicine. “Bringing ZAP-X to Thailand is another meaningful step toward changing that reality and making gold-standard SRS available to many more patients.”
ZAP-X Uses Gyroscopic Technology for Precision
The ZAP-X is known for its emphasis on treatment accuracy and quality. Proprietary gyroscopic mobility is used to direct radiosurgical beams. It can aim those beams from thousands of possible angles. Then the system concentrates the radiation exactly on target. The goal of this method is to minimize unnecessary radiation to normal brain tissue. It also targets key structures surrounding the treatment site.
These structures include the brainstem, eyes, and optic nerves. Consequently, the technology aims to support preservation of cognitive function and quality of life. The platform’s design represents another key difference from conventional dedicated radiosurgery systems. ZAP-X is the first and only vault-free dedicated SRS platform. Its self-shielded design removes the need for costly concrete radiation bunkers. This feature gives hospitals greater flexibility when selecting an installation site It can also help create a more open and patient-friendly treatment environment. Therefore, hospitals can approach radiosurgery infrastructure differently from traditional systems.
Linear Accelerator Technology Supports the Platform
ZAP-X also differs from legacy dedicated radiosurgery technologies in its radiation source. Traditional systems can rely on cobalt-60 for radiosurgery treatments. By contrast, ZAP-X uses a modern linear accelerator. This design eliminates the need to manage radioactive isotopes. It also removes concerns related to source decay. In addition, hospitals do not need recurring source replacement associated with cobalt-60 systems.
So the technology is combining the precision of radiosurgery with a different infrastructure model. This synergy can give hospitals more flexibility in the setting of treatment. The installation at Vibharam Amatanakorn Specialized Cancer Hospital represents a major stride for advanced cancer care in Thailand. It also marks the first time the ZAP-X platform is available in Southeast Asia. The hospital anticipates the system will begin supporting patient care in early 2027. Vibharam aims to enhance accessibility to cutting-edge radiosurgery services through the exclusive SRS center.
The development also enhances the Vibharam Hospital Group’s specialty cancer care offerings. Meanwhile, ZAP-X provides another advanced technology option for eligible patients. The ongoing installation of robotic brain radiosurgery technology will bring the technology closer to patients in Thailand. It will also create a new regional footprint for ZAP Surgical Systems in Southeast Asia.
