Cancer care remains at the heart of City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago’s growth strategy. The organization has named David B. Stewart Sr., M.D., as Chief of Surgery and Medical Director of Surgical Operations across its Illinois locations.
The appointment brings an experienced surgical leader to one of the region’s leading cancer centers. In his new position, Dr. Stewart will focus on expanding access to advanced surgical procedures and strengthening clinical research efforts. He will also help advance care models designed to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
A board-certified colorectal surgeon, Dr. Stewart brings more than 20 years of experience to the role. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for using minimally invasive and robotic techniques while keeping patient goals at the center of treatment decisions.

Expanding Surgical Expertise and Research
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Stewart has contributed extensively to medical research and professional leadership initiatives. He serves as an investigator supported by both the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. His work has focused on advancing knowledge in colorectal surgery and improving standards of care.
He also plays an active role in national accreditation and certification programs that support quality cancer treatment across the United States.

Before joining City of Hope, Dr. Stewart served as Division Chief of General Surgery at Southern Illinois University. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and completed advanced surgical training through respected residency and fellowship programs. His appointment reflects City of Hope’s continued investment in clinical excellence, research, and patient-focused cancer care.
