ModMed Strengthens AI-Powered Patient Engagement With Bonsai Health Acquisition

ModMed Acquires Bonsai Health to Accelerate AI-Powered Patient Engagement

ModMed®, a leading provider of specialty medical software and services, announced the acquisition of Bonsai Health. Bonsai Health is an agentic AI patient engagement platform. Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. supports ModMed and will help expand the company’s footprint in healthcare technology innovations. This acquisition is instrumental for ModMed in creating an AI-Powered Practice, which requires increased automation. The platform offers automation of patient reactivation and self-scheduling using artificial intelligence.

“We are thrilled to welcome the incredible team at Bonsai Health into the ModMed family,” said Dan Cane, co-Founder and co-CEO of ModMed. “Bonsai was built on a simple but powerful mission: to ensure the right care happens at the right time. Their agentic AI platform and approach to patient reactivation are a perfect fit for our vision of the AI-Powered Practice. By bringing together the top-tier talent and solutions from both organizations, we’re creating an innovation powerhouse dedicated to delivering more value to the practices we serve.”

Proactive Engine for Practice Growth

Bonsai Health is a proactive engine that automates many of the critical front office tasks for healthcare providers. The technology employs advanced agentic artificial intelligence to detect gaps in patients’ health history and scheduling opportunities within providers’ calendars. Bonsai makes use of SMS and email communications to handle reactivation and scheduling for patients without any staff intervention. Such automated processes increase efficiency for medical practices. The system is an add-on to ModMed’s suite of patient engagement tools based on Klara.
Staff can easily manage all conversations on a single platform, Klara. Bonsai provides an additional layer with an emphasis on proactively driving patient outcomes and scheduling through artificial intelligence.

Acquisition to Accelerate Growth and Innovation

ModMed plans to accelerate Bonsai Health’s growth by expanding its reach across nearly 50,000 healthcare providers. The company serves multiple specialties, including dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, and ENT practices. The acquisition strengthens ModMed’s leadership by adding experienced founders from Bonsai Health to its team. Travis Schneider and Luke Kervin bring significant expertise in patient engagement and previously co-founded PatientPop.

“Joining the ModMed family provides us with the scale and resources of an industry leader to bring our AI technology to nearly 50,000 providers,” said Luke Kervin, co-Founder and co-CEO of Bonsai Health. “ModMed’s deep clinical datasets and industry-leading infrastructure provide the perfect environment to advance our agentic AI innovation faster than ever before. We share a common vision of a future where AI-driven workflows lead to healthier patients, happier staff, and stronger practices.”

“ModMed’s commitment to building the AI-Powered Practice is exactly the kind of innovation-led platform expansion we look for in a market-leading investment,” said Paul Huber, Managing Director at Clearlake. “Agentic AI is transforming the front office in healthcare—shifting from reactive, staff-driven workflows to proactive, automated patient engagement at scale—and Bonsai Health is a best-in-class example of where this technology is headed. We’re excited to bring Bonsai’s capabilities to ModMed’s nearly 50,000-provider network and continue building the definitive AI-powered platform for specialty medicine.”
